It has been an unwritten tradition for pregnant women to take herbal tea or coffee in the hope of reducing the size of their baby.
Most pregnant women fear birthing big babies, thereby going to the length of taking excessive herbal tea just to get their baby’s weight down for easy labor.
While the majority of ladies ( pregnant women) love chubby and big babies, most of them have this fear that they won’t be able to push out the baby during delivery, they fear that they may experience vagina tear and episiotomy, and they also have this fear that they may end up having to birth their baby through cesarean section, hence the reason why they take herbal ea and coffee which may be detrimental to the health of their baby.
However, the taking of herbal tea in a normal proportion(200mg) during pregnancy is not the issue because it has its benefits to pregnant women and their babies.
It helps the heartbeat of the baby, it is a good antioxidant and does more when taken in the normal proportion.
The real issue and big mistake most pregnant women do is taking these substances excessively without caution.
For instance, most pregnant women cook up to 10 bags of herbal tea and keep on drinking it daily hoping that the baby size will reduce, or they tend to take too much caffeine, in the same way, hoping for the same result. This method of consuming both substances is way too harmful to both the baby and the expectant mother.
Any pregnant mother doing this currently should bear in mind that she is doing both herself and the unborn baby a lot of harm by taking these substances excessively.
Now, why is it wrong for a pregnant woman to take these two substances excessively?
Herbal/tea and caffeine inhibit the absorption of folic acid in the body, and once your body can no longer absorb folic absorb any more, your unborn baby won’t get enough folic acid and this can lead to a case known as a congenital abnormality or called spina bifida.
Why is folic acid important for a growing baby?
During the early development of a baby, folic acid aids help from the neutral tube. It is very important to a growing baby because it prevents some defects of the baby’s spine and brain. Also, it helps the baby’s tissues grow, help form red blood cell and works with vitamins to enable the baby’s body to break down, use, and create protein.
Excessive intake of herbal tea and caffeine took with hopes of reducing the child’s weight can lead to Diuresis (frequent urination), and too much urination will make your body lose the essential and beneficial nutrients your body needs, and these minerals will be lost when you’re frequently urinating.
In some cases, it may go to length to even cause miscarriage and premature labor.
There are creditable Studies that have shown that this excess intake of caffeine and herbal tea can cause childhood obesity too after the baby has been born.
The best and safe way to regulate your baby’s weight is by watching how you eat and what you consume, although it is almost impossible to do in most cases of pregnancy, a pregnant woman should give it a try.
In all honestly, being pregnant comes with too many weird cravings, try your best to minimize how you eat and what you eat and also keep your diet balanced. Don’t eat just because you hungry, or eat just about everything you feel like eating, doing so will ensure that you gain excess weight in the first place.
In other words, eat healthy meals rich in nutrition required for a healthy baby.
Although taking herbal tea and caffeine may be harmful to you and your baby, taking them in moderation is quite helpful and it advisable that a pregnant lady should reduce her caffeine and tea intake, and not use a particular brand regularly.
